When drivers are reckless, inattentive or too tired to be behind the wheel of a car, terrible tragedies can occur. In just a split second, people can suffer debilitating injuries. They may even lose their life.

In late August, a Kentucky man caused a fatal car accident after he drove through a red light. The driver admitted that he was tired. He recently pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and driving without insurance.

The accident victim was a Procter and Gamble executive who left behind a young son and wife.

The driver who caused the fatal accident was recently sentenced to 180 days in jail. He will also be on probation for five years and be forced to pay $1,500 in fines.

“Driving while exhausted is so dangerous. It’s as dangerous as drinking while driving or texting while driving. I mean somebody ultimately was killed here,” the victim’s wife said.

In addition to criminal charges, the negligent driver may also face other legal problems. In situations like this, surviving family members may choose to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit to cover medical costs, lost wages, emotional trauma and funeral expenses.

People in Covington and elsewhere may forget how dangerous a car can be. A devastating accident can occur even if people only take their eyes off the road for a single second. It is important that drivers do all that they can to keep roads safe for themselves and other motorists.

Families in Covington who have lost a loved one due to another driver’s negligence may wish to consult with an experienced attorney to determine what legal options they can pursue.
